![]() Many folks will decide to wall mount the Alpha 25es surround speakers, as their shape seems to suggest. I set up the speakers, placing the bookshelf-size Alpha 20s on stands with the tweeters at my seated ear level. The hybrid is stiffer than all-metal diaphragms, and Infinity claims that it yields smooth frequency response, low coloration, and low distortion. In effect a parametric equalizer, BOS has three more rotary controls: for frequency (20 to 80 Hz), level (0 to -14 dB), and width (4.5 to 49.5 Hz).Īll of the speakers share a common driver technology, Infinity's Ceramic Metal Matrix Diaphragm (CMMD), in which a diaphragm with two ceramic layers is separated by a metal substrate. Switches select phase polarity and turn the low-pass filter and the Bass Optimization System (BOS) on or off. In particular, the sub has rotary controls to adjust level and to set the low-pass crossover frequency (between 50 and 150 Hz with a steep, 24-dB-per-octave slope). The large cabinet, big driver, and high-power amp not only provide the muscle you need to achieve loud bass, but the sub also provides controls for getting the bass to sound just right. The subwoofer is the front-firing, rear-ported Alpha 1200s, with a 12-inch driver and 500-watt amplifier. Around back are four keyhole slots for wall mounting. In bipole mode, the drivers are in phase, providing greater localization. In dipole mode, both sets are playing, but they operate out of phase to provide greater ambience. In monopole (direct-radiating) mode, only one set of drivers is powered. The center face holds a switch for selecting dipole, monopole, or bipole operation. The two outer sides each contain a 1-inch tweeter and a 5 1/4-inch midrange driver, but in different orientations - one has the tweeter on top, the other has it on the bottom. The three front sides of the speaker form 120° angles, and each has a separately removable grille cloth. The surround channels feed Alpha 25es speakers. Around back, the speaker has a firing-angle adjuster so you can aim it toward your listening position. This three-way design has a 1-inch tweeter above a 4-inch midrange driver, both flanked by two 6 1/2-inch woofers. ![]() Center-channel duties were handled by the Alpha 37c, which is larger than most center speakers - in fact, it's almost as wide as some TVs I've owned. Behind a detachable grille, this two-way bookshelf speaker sports a 1-inch tweeter, a 6 1/2-inch woofer, and a front port. It had been a while since I had carefully auditioned Infinity's sound, so I was happy that Sound & Visionasked me to review a system from the new, reasonably priced Alpha line to see if the company's "ears" had changed. Yes, there's general agreement about what constitutes "good sound," but there's a vast gray area of disagreement about exactly how a speaker should be "voiced." For example, some people prefer bright speakers, whereas others like a darker, more mellow tone.
